The Demand Response Potential Calculator provides a basic estimate of the available market potential for demand response in a given marketplace. The calculator uses DR product benchmark performance information gathered from IEA DSM Programme’s Task XIII as a proxy for DR market penetration. It then translates this proxy to the local market based on some simple local market user inputs. The available market potential should be viewed as a rough estimate only. Detailed consumer surveys should be done to get more accurate results. Nonetheless, the DR Potential Calculator will provide a quick way to see the level of demand response available in your market.
The “calculator” consists of three easy to use spreadsheets, one for the residential market sector, one for small business customers, and one for large commercial and industrial (C&I) customers. The residential and small commercial spreadsheets estimate demand response potentials for direct load control programs for air conditioners, water heaters, and space heating systems. The large C&I spreadsheet estimates demand response potential for interruptible rate and demand bidding programs.
For the residential and small business calculators, the user inputs:
· The total number of customers in their area.
· The percentages of customers that own appliances to be covered by the direct load control program.
· The average demand response reduction per appliance for their area.
North American data for all parameters are provided for comparison purposes. The residential demand response potential is calculated using the North American long-term program direct load control participation rates of 50% of the eligible customers.
For the large C&I demand response programs, two potential estimation methods are presented. The first uses the simple 10% of C&I peak demand benchmark developed from North American interruptible rate and demand bidding programs. The second estimation method requires the user to input the following program parameters:
- The total number of C&I customers in their area.
- The percentage of customers that are eligible for the demand response programs.
- The average impact per customer.
The calculator estimates the demand response potential using the North American long-term program participation rates of 10% for demand bidding and 25% for interruptible rate programs. North American data for all parameters are provided for comparison purposes.
